Ribiška Družina Koper (RD Koper).
Ribiška Družina Koper was founded on 11 June 1961 in the city of Koper. Over more than six decades, the club has developed a strong focus on the careful stewardship of the fragile coastal waters of Slovenian Istria.
Despite having a relatively small membership, RD Koper is considered a modern and well-organized fishing family, managing its waters with an emphasis on sustainability, habitat protection, and the conservation of native fish species. Operating in a region where freshwater resources are limited and under constant pressure, the club plays a key role in safeguarding some of Slovenia’s southernmost salmonid habitats.

Waters Managed by RD Koper.
RD Koper manages a limited number of short karst rivers and streams draining directly into the Adriatic Sea. These waters are strongly influenced by Mediterranean climate, with clear flows, limestone substrates, and pronounced seasonal variation. Fishing is technical and best suited to experienced anglers.
- Rižana River – The Rižana is a characteristic Adriatic river that flows entirely within Slovenian territory, from its karst spring beneath the Kraški–Slavniški Plateau to its outflow into the Adriatic Sea. Rising near the village of Hrastovlje, the river runs for approximately 14 km and is shaped by clear limestone geology and strong seasonal variation. The primary native salmonid species of the Rižana is the Marble Trout (Salmo marmoratus), which is historically native to Adriatic drainages. Alongside Marble Trout, the local fishing club refers to the presence of indigenous brown trout of Mediterranean phenotype. However, this designation is not currently supported by genetic research, and the exact taxonomic status of these fish remains unclear.
It is therefore uncertain whether these brown trout represent a truly native population or the result of early historical stockings, possibly predating the 20th century. They may correspond to Salmo ghigii or to Adriatic forms within the Salmo trutta complex, but no definitive scientific confirmation exists for the Rižana system. Hybridization with Marble Trout has also occurred.
